Stone Age to Iron Age

You can focus purely on the Stone Age for half a day, or explore through to the Bronze Age and Iron Age in a full Day.
  • Imagine life before metal with hands on investigations of fantastic Stone Age artefacts and tools.
  • Have a go using charcoal and pastels to learn about Cave Painting and create a souvenir of the day.
  • Explore Bronze Age artefacts and tools through archeological evidence.
  • Explore the development of pottery, farming and life in Rounds for the British Celts. How did they defend and attack?

Egyptians

Catherine will arrive as a Victorian Archeologist to explore this hugely popular ancient topic.
  • Hands on investigation of artefacts linked to every day living on the Nile, tools and skills, the afterlife, Gods, Pharaohs and Tutankhamun.
  • Mummification - wonderfully gruesome!
  • Hieroglyphic numbers and letters. Be a scribe and have a go with reed pen and ink to create a souvenir of the day.
  • Games of luck and skill.
  • Warfare.

Greeks

Katerina will focus primarily on the Classical period and the wealth of evidence provided through archeology. Explore society and the lives of both men and women.
  • Investigate hands on with museum quality artefacts to learn about everyday life, education and law.
  • Compare life in Athens and Sparta for both girls and boys.
  • Greek games - using strategy.
  • Why were they such successful fighters - battle tactics and weapons.
  • Medicine and Hippocrates.

Romans

Flavia will arrive with fantastic museum quality resources to explore nearly 300 years of Roman occupation.
  • Hands on investigations of artefacts to explore everyday life and legionaries.
  • Roman writing and numerals.
  • Roman Games - of luck and skill.
  • Life in the army - learn Roman drill with a shield and gladius. (Great for photos!)
  • The British Celts and Boudicca - how did they live and fight? how were they different to the Romans?

Maya 

Itzel will arrive in her hand woven cortes and embroidered huipil and a huge range of quality resources, many directly from Mexico and Guatemala to explore this fascinating civilisation .
  • Hands on investigations of artefacts to explore life and beliefs.
  • Glyphs and the Number System.
  • Understand their concept of time, and astrology through the Calendar Rounds.

Anglo-Saxons

Aelfled will arrive to explore the Invasion of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes.

  • Crafts and skills.
  • Have a go at leatherwork to make a souvenir of the day while learning about the ancient Runes.
  • Life in a longhouse.
  • Trading and raiding - have a go with shield and axe!

Vikings

Astrid will teach about the Vikings as settlers, raiders and traders using an extensive range of artefacts.
  • Hands on artefact investigation.
  • Viking Runes - learn a Viking craft skill to create a souvenir of the day.
  • Life in a longhouse.
  • Trading and actually see how their coins were made.
  • Raiders! Experience being in a shield wall and learn Norse battle commands to terrify your enemy.

Tudors

A general approach to the Tudors has always been popular, Using archeological evidence from the Mary Rose, portraits and writing there is a wealth of information  to learn. Days can include;
  • Comparing the lives of the rich and poor.
  • Hands on artefact investigations.
  • Tudor Education  - schools, learn to use a counting board and latin numerals.
  • Navigation and exploration.
  • Tudor games and pastimes.
  • Code breaking - Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I.
  • Weapons - ready to challenge the Spanish Armada!
  • Tudor Dancing - learn a couple of dances to live music.

World War 1

Catherine will arrive as a WWI Nurse to bring this topic to life. This workshop is completely age appropriate to learn about the key themes.
  •  How the war started and who was involved.
  •  What was life like in the Trenches?  Conditions and daily routines.
  •  Write a letter home from the trenches using period dip pens and ink.
  •  Hands on investigation of artefacts linked to both British and German soldiers.
  •  How did the soldiers attempt to relax? Period games to play.
  •  Have a go -  Drill and bayonet charge!
  •  The role of horses and cavalry.
  •  The role of women before, during and after the War.
  •  Suffragettes. Create a paper rosette as a souvenir of the day.
  •  Remembrance, Poppies and direct family history with my Grandfather's medals.

World War 2

This is a great way to start a topic and get a feel for the period. It's so easy to dress up for and directly relates to every child's family history.
  • Learn from period newspapers and posters - propoganda.
  • The Battle of the Atlantic - crack the enigma code.
  • Rationing. Take up the challenge to "Not Waste Food" at lunchtime!
  • The Blitz, aircraft recognition, blackout and  air raids.
  • Uniforms and helmets to try on and explore.
  • Have a go - Drill and bayonet charge!
  • Period games. How could you pass the time in the Anderson Shelter?
