Knights and Castles

As Lady Catherine, I introduce the period and look at the differences between rich and poor with the everyday items they used. I am always on the look out for more servants......... but who will I choose to be my Lord?
  • Hands on artefacts to explore a wide range of puzzling objects - what are they made of and what are they for?
  • How was their life different to ours today?
  • Investigate the weaponry and armour of a Knight to see if you would have been strong enough to battle.

The Great Fire of London

As a servant to Samuel Pepys, Catherine will explain life in 1666 using period artefacts. Using role play to tell the story of the Great Fire of London and how it spread. What evidence do we have from that time about what happened?
  • Investigate unusual artefacts to focus on the different materials and discuss ideas about how the items could have been used.
  • Have a go writing with a quill pen and ink - just like Samuel Pepys.

Pirates

A great day for everyone to dress up for!
  • Using a wide range of artefacts we will look at items we need on board ship.
  • Split up into crews to investigate puzzling artefacts and try to guess how they would have been used in the time of the fearsome Blackbeard.
  • Investigate maps and compass directions, learn how to find the depth of the sea so you don't get shipwrecked!
  • Experience the weight of the weapons we need in case our ship is attacked.

Florence Nightingale

Florence will arrive in role with a range of artefacts. There is plenty of opportunity for role play and questions as we look at her life and why we remember her.
  • What was her childhood like?
  • Have a go with slate boards, chalk, dip pens and ink.
  • How did she improve conditions for soldiers at Scutari?
  • Role play - taking care of a soldier and learn how to bandage. (Great for photos!)
A great opportunity for comparing with life today - clothes, medicine, hospitals.

Victorian School

Miss will arrive in character - with a cane and without a smile!
This is a great half day workshop for the children to experience;
  • Lessons taught and how children learnt.
  • Chanting and memorising.
  • Using slate boards and chalk.
  • Beautiful handwriting using dip pens and ink.
  • Victorian behaviour and discipline!
Often combined with the Traditional Toys workshop.

Traditional Toys

  1.  A wide range of exciting Traditional Toys for the children to actually play with, explore and have a huge amount of fun.
  • What are they made of and how do they work - materials and mechanisms.
  • Develop new skills.
  • Persevere and hopefully catch the ball in the cup!
Enjoy learning the rules and playing some traditional games too.

World War I

Catherine will arrive as a WWI Nurse to bring this topic to life. This workshop is completely age appropriate to learn about the key themes.
  • How the war started and who was involved.
  • Life in the Trenches.
  • Hands on investigation of artefacts linked to both British and German soldiers.
  • The role of women during the War.
  • Role play to learn how to care for a wounded soldier - a great photo opportunity!

We will discuss Remembrance, Poppies and direct family history with my Grandfather's medals.

Homes from 1940 onwards

Catherine will arrive in my "Sunday Best", introduce household life and how the role of women has changed. We will explore a range of artefacts from homes in different decades to compare to modern life.
  • Have  a go using a typewriter.
  • Investigate artefacts such as a rotary phone, milk bottle warmer, rug beater, wireless radio.
  • Find your favourite wallpaper design from the 40's, 60's, 70's or 80's.
  • Enjoy traditional board games and a Beetle Drive!
